This introduction to the special section presents a definition of epidemiological research.  Reflecting this definition, two themes—informing public policy and community-wide health—that differentiate much of the research in epidemiology from traditional clinical research are identified and reviewed.  These themes serve as the framework for the special section.  Contributions selected as part of the special section are then briefly introduced in association with these themes.
